The Herstory Corner
Welcome to The Herstory Corner: your helpful guide to books
and resources by or about Sikh women.
This blog aims to provide you with an introduction to a variety of material that you can read, watch or listen to, in order to learn more about the diverse roles that Sikh women have played in the world.
It is a widely known and understood issue that history-writing has tended to be dominated by the stories and perspectives of men. Unfortunately, this has long been the case with a lot of work on Sikh history, despite the equal place that Sikhi gives to women in society, and the significant parts that Sikh women have had to play in shaping the community over the centuries.
This is not to say, however, that Sikh women’s history or writings by Sikh women have been entirely neglected. There is a relatively longstanding and growing body of fascinating work that has not always received the publicity that it deserves – this is exactly the kind of material that our blog will endeavour to share with you. The Herstory Corner is written and designed with an entirely non-specialist audience in mind: so if you’re someone who is curious to learn more about the position of Sikh women, and perhaps also to begin to engage with the new ways in which ideas from gender studies and feminism are having an impact on the way we develop understandings about the community, then look no further!
Each blog post will cover a new resource or connected set of resources, and will provide a brief introduction to the creator and the content of their work, so that you can get a snapshot of what it’s all about and see if it could be something that grabs your interest. The aim behind all of this is to enable you, the curious reader, to engage with all of the interesting research and literature that is out there about Sikh women. We hope that you enjoy learning from the material that we discuss on here, and that it encourages you to share the stories that fascinated you most with your friends and family. Together, we can hopefully spark a new, more informed and more constructive conversation about women and gender issues, not only within the Sikh community, perhaps even beyond!
