She was the very first Asian woman police officer, not only in London but also in the world. She was an inspiring Sikh woman who broke barriers.

She was a pioneer and well ahead of her times.

Karpal Kaur Sandhu was the first Asian woman to join the Metropolitan Police Force. Born into a Sikh family in Zanzibar, she arrived in the United Kingdom in 1962, where she worked as a nurse. She joined the police force in 1971, and served in Hornsey, Leyton and Walthamstow.

She was described by her Chief Superintendent as “proving invaluable with dealings with the immigrant population...and also in teaching police officers Asian dialects. She was energetic, intelligent and conscientious”.

“Even though Karpal was only in the force for two years, in that period, she made a huge difference in the community”

She should be remembered as a pioneer, and for making the ultimate sacrifice for her passion and commitment to her job protecting others.

I fully support the campaign for a memorial to honour Britain's first female Asian police officer.

A memorial for Karpal Kaur Sandhu will inspire other Sikh and Asian women around the world to join the police force and other male-dominated professions. I hope it will help smash gender taboos.
